On Thursday 1 July and Monday 5 July, our intrepid Year 10 Geographers descended on Swanage, happy that fieldtrips are going ahead again.  There was much excitement on the coach, and eventually we could see the sea. Obviously, we sung all the seaside songs. When we got to Swanage carpark, we walked along the sea wall past all the 18 groynes to the side of the beach where Old Harry stands tall. We sat on the sand and drew a field sketch of the beach including the landforms and the beach management that had been added. In 3 locations along the beach, we did some data collection tasks and recorded the results in our booklets. One of the tasks was measuring the longshore drift; we threw apples into the sea and then measured how far it had drifted and in which direction. Mr Haines then had to go and collect the apples! We also measured the width of the beach from the high-water mark to the bottom of the cliff, along with several other types of data collection. We did this in all 3 locations and had lunch in-between them. All of this was helping us to judge how effective the coastal management is in Swanage.

Once all our work was completed, some people got fish and chips from the café, and everyone enjoyed delicious ice creams. After lunch we were allowed to go off on our own for a bit and go in shops or wander around the town and beach. We then went home and lots of us slept on the way back. Overall, it was a very fun day which allowed us to gain first-hand experience and knowledge about our ‘coasts’ geography topic.
