Next Steps - May 2025

Congratulations to our Next Steps team who, following the recent audit, were ranked 1st out of 54 schools and colleges in the Somerset Careers Hub.

Our careers programme includes annual events such as career talks, work experience, mock interviews and one-to-one guidance which supports our students on their next step journey.

We also have to thank the local community for their help in supporting students to work towards their career ambitions.

'Made in Somerset' - May/June 2025

Our incredible 'Team Thrifted' reached the national finals of Landsec Group's 'Made in Somerset' competition which took place at Landsec's London HQ on 18th June.  The team of Tallis, Valerie and Bella reached the final three out of thirty six school teams in the UK.

The team showcased their innovative sustainable design concept to 're-imagine a local retail space' with a sustainable clothing company 'Thrift'd' - a retail brand designed for people to buy designer and high quality clothese and repurposed items in Clarks Village.

Award winning author - May 2025

We welcomed award-winning author, Nathanael Lessore, to College together with visiting students from Oakfield Academy.  As well as talking to students and answering questions on his writing journey, there was a book signing session.

MNSP Book Awards - 22nd May 2025

The College hosted the first MNSP Trust Book Awards on Thursday 22nd May in the Merlin Theatre.

Library staff from schools in the partnership worked together to form panels of students at each school who have been reading and reviewing six shortlisted titles.  Participating students, librarians and many of the shortlisted authors came together to celebrate the inaugural awards.

 The shortlisted entries were:

  •  The List by Keith Gray (dyslexic friendly)
  • Keedie by Elle McNicol
  • Bird Boy by Catherine Bruton
  • Cross my Heart and Never Lie by Nora Dasnes Cross
  • Murder at Wintertide by Fleur Hitchcock
  • Sisters of Sword and Shadow by Laura Bates

Students voted to decide on their favourite book and Bird Boy was a very deserved winner.  Congratulations to Catherine Bruton.

Thank you to Hunting Raven Books for their support for the competition.  The titles are available to order from them and are thoroughly recommend for readers aged 11-16.
