Aspiring physicists have been given a taste of outer space!
Students taking Year 12 Physics had an out-of-this-world experience when a representative from the National Space Agency visited for a special masterclass. The visiting expert, Phil Lynch, provided hands-on training in cutting-edge space science topics including getting into space, astronomy, spectroscopy, and quantum physics.
"It was an amazing opportunity for our students to learn directly from a top engineer working at the forefront of space exploration," said Peter Jones, Head of science. "Having access to real data from the National Space Agency brought these concepts to life in a way textbooks simply can't match."
During the masterclass, students participated in interactive sessions analysing actual spectroscopic data from probes studying the atmospheres of exoplanets in other star systems. They also learned about the principles of quantum physics that underlie next-generation space technologies. A particular highlight was the "Getting Into Space" segment, which walked students through the mechanics of launching rockets and satellites into orbit.
The masterclass was part of an ongoing partnership between Frome College science department and the AIM program, which connects students with leading experts across science, technology, and engineering fields.
