Frome College was honoured to welcome the Mk3 Merlin helicopter and Royal Navy personnel to the school on Wednesday 20 June. The College is committed to promoting careers in STEM subjects, and our students had the unique opportunity to speak to the visiting Royal Navy about their careers, and see the inner workings of the helicopter.

Saturday 23 June marks International Women in Engineering Day, which is an awareness campaign to raise the profile of women in engineering across the globe. A group of our Year 9 and 10 female students were given the opportunity to get ‘hands-on’ with Science workshops throughout the morning, including 'The Science of aerofoils', 'What is ground resonance?', and took part in our 'Build a trebuchet challenge'

After watching the arrival of the Merlin helicopter, the group of students showed the Royal Navy’s female engineers their work from the morning, and discussed the amazing career opportunities available to girls in this exciting industry over lunch.

Not forgetting all the other students who have an interest in careers in aviation, STEM or the military, all year groups were given the opportunity to hear about the day to day workings of pilots, aircrew and engineers at RNAS Yeovilton.

To finish the day, there was a Q&A session with the Navy personnel, and students were able to enjoy a tour of the aircraft before take off at 3.45pm.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in such an exciting and memorable day!
