On Tuesday 16 January, 20 NCFE Level 2 Engineering students in Year 10 visited Wainwright Quarry for a tour of the quarry and a manufacturing plant to find out how quarries are run.

Over the next few months students will explore various sectors of engineering and they will develop their hand skills by creating a multi tool and pipe wrench.

The students are currently studying an Engineering careers unit, and to make this more work related we have teamed up with Somerset Earth Science Centre and Wainwrights Ltd, to create a unit of work that directly relates to real life situations.  The student’s visits to the Earth Science Centre and the quarry enabled them to experience real life risk assessment activities as well as a variety of different work based challenges.

We have been extremely lucky that both the Earth Science Centre and employees from John Wainwright & Co have been working alongside us to set the NCFE assignments, to ensure the work the students are doing bears relevance to the real world of Engineering.  This gives the students a great opportunity for any future career aspirations, and is also a great experience for jobs and UCAS applications.

We would like to thank both Wainwrights Quarry and the Earth Science Centre for their continued support of Frome College.
