Frome students have participated in a number of very exciting and ground breaking projects in the past four years as part of our Able and Ambitious Programme.

A unique feature of the Programme is the collaboration with Bath University Ambassador Tutors; who are completing their undergraduate studies, Masters Degrees and in some cases Doctorate Degrees, whilst concurrently helping our students to shine in a range of ambitious projects using Wednesday twilight time.
In the spring of 2016, students worked on a very innovative project on Social Justice and Climate Change which gave particular focus to the work of His Excellency President Mohamed Nasheed, former President of the Maldives. After working with Bath University Ambassadors, a group of Year 10 and Year 12 students gave a stunning presentation of the life’s work of the President; who we were honoured to have as our VIP Guest of Honour as part of the ‘Earth Day’ celebrations. President Nasheed congratulated the students on their articulate, thoughtful and world class presentations and received a self-portrait from one of our A Level Art students. Frome College teacher Mr. Curtis who helped to co-ordinate the project, thanked the President for attending this event and said it was one of the finest Presentation evenings of his entire teaching career.

  • Science Projects involving the different types of energy resources in our society.  Students made solar energy devices and mini-turbines which were shown to parents during a presentation evening in the Merlin Theatre.
  • Students worked on a very exciting project about the Olympic Games and gave fascinating talks in small groups about the role of drugs in sport and the Zika virus problems that existed in the run up to the last Olympic Games.
  • Project exploring the impact of pain in psychology; students worked with two Undergraduates for eight weeks on a pain exploration module.  Posters were created and presented to parents.
  • Another innovative project involved students looking at the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement; students researched race and social issues around the globe with particular emphasis on the USA and South Africa.
  • Students researched the area of capital punishment and presented the key aspects of their work to their parents and grandparents in the Frome Futures Building.
  • Event Management -Students worked on a module designed to look at the factors involved in arranging a rock concert and have used an array of strategies to ensure that a large scale event can be run successfully – using marketing and financial based strategies.
Students are given the opportunity to spend quality time visiting the University of Bath and talking with Undergraduate and Post-Graduate Ambassador Tutors.  They are given a tour of the campus and have an opportunity to immerse themselves into the role of a university student for a day.  Guest lectures are arranged on a myriad of fascinating lecture topics and our students are given opportunities to give brief presentations on the areas in which they have researched during their visit to the University of Bath.

Frome College will continue to build on the exciting links we have made with the Widening Participation Team at the University of Bath in the future.  We will continue to run projects for Able and Ambitious students with the aim of creating a world class education provision within which our students can continue to flourish.
