Frome College Principal, Gavin BallWelcome to Frome College

As Principal I have the privilege of leading the learning, development and care of such wonderfully talented young people. I am also fortunate to lead a caring, warm and dedicated team of staff.

Frome College is a special place. Every young person has the right and ability to succeed. It is our job to nurture and develop the talents in all of our students. We believe in every child achieving their personal best and challenging them to do so.

We believe in developing the character of every student. Frome College is ambitious and we want our students to be ambitious. Life at the College is about participating and wanting to be the best, do your best, and achieve your best.

As a community of 1,300 young people it is an exciting place, full of opportunity and development for every type of student. With a Sixth Form of 400 students we offer a very wide range and combination of courses.

Our core business is learning. Our brand of teaching and learning challenges students to think, to have enquiring minds, to take risks, to innovate.

Maths, English and Science are seen as critical. However students have a very broad range of options, with three years to study these courses. This gives our students more time to develop deeper learning and enthusiasm for their studies. We have eight schools of learning, called Faculties with each Head of Faculty accountable for the academic success in their area. Academic success is seen as a key part of the passport for future success in life.

Frome College is so much more than a successful exams factory. Our large organisation is broken down into a series of small schools called Houses. Each House is led by a Head of House who is in effect the headteacher of their small school. Honours can be achieved by representing your House in sporting, community and academic ‘fixtures’. Competition is fierce.

The College is extremely successful at sport. We are County Champions in Under 16 Boys Football and Under 16 Girls Football, beating public and private sector schools. We are runners up in the County Rugby Championship. Our relationship with Fusion, the Leisure Centre provider, will provide our students with £2 million of new sports facilities over the next couple of years.

Music, art, drama, dance and media are very strong at the College, with our students performing and exhibiting high quality work in the community. The College also has its own theatre on campus (Merlin), its own amphitheatre (ECOS) and its own studio theatre (Media Arts) providing wonderful facilities for our students.

Enterprise and employability are a crucial part of our offer. All students have an on-going CV where they look at a gap analysis of their own skills and experiences for the future careers they aspire to. Our business links are very strong providing regular careers cafes, business breakfasts, careers fairs, internships and one-to-one interviews. Our strong relationship with the University of Bath provides additional aspiration and guidance for all of our students.

Underpinning this is a comprehensive Student Welfare team operating from a student care centre. This team supports the Heads of House and Heads of Faculty providing a wide range of care services for all of our students. Frome College is a very warm, caring school that believes in developing confident and well-balanced young people that believe in themselves: our Welfare team help us achieve this.

The strength of our relationships coupled with traditional values that also embrace 21st century innovation provide a unique education for our young people. Academic, cultural and sporting opportunities drive our participation offer. High expectations for every student to achieve their personal best lie at our core. Respect and tolerance for one’s self and for others are central to our value set. All of this set in a beautiful green spacious campus makes Frome College a wonderful place to study and to work.
